The Early Days of EFD

Our department was formed in 1921 when the city of Eastpointe was known as the Village of Halfway. It was called Halfway because the area was roughly located 'halfway' between downtown Detroit and Mt. Clemens. A group of village business and homeowners called the Crescentwood Improvement Association purchased two chemical hosecarts that were stored in various locations in the village. In the early days, those carts were taken to a fire by the villagers and many assisted the early volunteer department. Later in 1921 the same group purchased the 1921 Model T firetruck. Lorenz Rein, the first fire chief was appointed in 1921 and the Halfway Volunteer fire department began its existence. The first firefighters were Cyril Derdaele, Jess Hamner, Ray Woodcock, William Tuckey, Frank Schuster, Gottfried Eschmann, August Zado, Richard Paetsch & Fred Rader.
