In June of 1956 the old Chesterfield Inn, famed for two decades as a gambling palace burned in a spectacular blaze that drew 8 neighboring departments to assist the East Detroit Fire Department. In fact it was this fire that precipitated the formation of the Macomb County Mutual Aid agreements that are still in place to bring additional equipment and manpower in the form of multiple alarms. The city of East Detroit was one of the first cities in the county to agree to the Mutual Aid agreements. The old Chesterfield sat on the site which is where the Olive Garden Restarant sits today at Gratiot and Chesterfield. This article and picture ran in the Detroit Free Press on June 11, 1956.
