In the early 1940's, the firefighters of East Detroit realized the need to begin Emergency Medical Services to the residents of the city. In the fall of 1944 the East Detroit firefighters held a series of fundraisers in an effort to raise $3,000.00, which would be enough money to purchase the city's first ambulance. By April, 1945 the new ambulance was purchased. This ambulance saw duty until it was replaced in February of 1956.
